Personal Disclosure

I grew up in environments shaped by addiction, trauma, and instability. From the age of 12 - 45, I used substances to 'have fun' and to cope. Like most, substance use started out 'innocent', with friends experimenting, however, I took it to a different level. As an adult I was functioning on the outside, conflicted on the inside, but I was able to keep it together. I hit bottom more than once.  While it wasn't all doom and gloom, there were many good times to be had and I remained in 'control' for most of it. In retrospect, the 'party' life was fun, sadly though, I realized that it became the norm. For over ten years leading up to my sobriety, people would say 'you got a problem". That often fell on deaf ears and the shame of it all was addressed with more self-medicating. No family, friend or person of authority was going to tell ME, that I have a problem.

As expected it began to worsen. Binging turned into benders and then blackouts were frightening to wake up from. I started hating myself the next day and found myself saying (wait for it) "I'll never do that again" said no one ever with a massive hangover. Of course, we all know how that story goes.  As I turned 40, 41, 42, 43, it didn't matter what was going on in my life, marriage, the death of my mother, the birth of my son, graduating university, the vicious circle of sabotage continued like a hamster on a wheel. During this time I was taking some dense psychology and cognitive science courses, along with Buddhism Psychology literature. All the material I was reading felt as though it were written for me.

Terminology such as self-deception, instant gratification, impulsivity, suffering, indulgence and self-destruction. This was making me think but it was still not enough to take action. The moment came when I started to 'learn how to learn' and pay attention to how my thoughts dictated my behaviour.  It was clear that I was bullshitting myself and had no one to blame. It was time to own up to it and take responsibility. With over six years of sobriety now, life doesn't get any easier. The universe doesn't care that you are sober. Life keeps happening and I can speak from experience that learning how to live in recovery is equally as important as the first step in getting clean. That is why I call the project : Sober Maintenance.

My story of recovery is currently being written in an autobiography that I intend to publish in 2026.
